Navigation &
Overnight Wild Camp

Black Mountains or Dartmoor
An excellent opportunity to get away from the crowds and experience the natural environment, alongside building new or improving skills needed in the hills.    

2 Days (1 overnight wild camp)

Suitable for:
  • Summer ML candidates whether training or assessment ready
  • Photographers interested in black sky areas
  • Anyone with a good level of fitness
  • Anyone interested in the peace and tranquillity of the mountains
  • All those who yearn to get off the beaten track

What you need:
  • 1:25,000 OS map and silva 4 compass
  • Pencil & small notepad
  • Small lightweight tent* or bivi bag
  • Sleeping bag & sleeping mat*
  • 65lt rucksack* with waterproof liner (either dry bags or rubble sacks)
  • Waterproof trousers and jacket (preferably goretex)
  • Personal outdoor clothing (synthetic or merino wool)
  • Boots with ankle support & walking socks (merino wool is excellent)
  • Please supply your own food if you have food allergies or specific dietary requirements 
*Limited amount of items can be loaned out. (Tents are 2 man).

What is provided:
  • Food packs for 2days including cereal bar, fruit, tea and coffee bags
  • Water bottles
  • Cooking stoves & fuel
  • Handouts

Map orientation – Covering features observations & contours

Starting with micro navigation moving point to point to get to the secret wild camp

Break for lunch and take in the environment, views, anything you like!

Arrive at wild camp - Tents, toilets, hygiene & water

Strike camp and move off with a lighter bag hopefully!

Navigation – looking at the bigger picture, picking out features in the distance and recognising ‘as the crow flies’ distances. More micro navigation and point to point.  Getting lost & relocation.
